THE NAME OF JESUS

June 6, 2010

(Phil 2:9 NIV) Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name,   (Phil 2:10 NIV) that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, (Phil 2:11 NIV) and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

The name of Jesus is a name that is above every other name. There is no other name that compares in the entire world to the name of Jesus. Why? There is great power in the name of Jesus. There are many reasons there is power in the name of Jesus. First, Jesus is the only name under Heaven in which man can be saved. (Acts 4:12 NIV) Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved."   The meaning of the name Jesus is “God in salvation.” That is why the Angel Gabriel told Mary to name her baby Jesus.  (Mat 1:21 NIV) She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."

Second, there is healing in the name of Jesus. Let’s look at an example from the book of Acts. (Acts 3:1 NIV) One day Peter and John were going up to the temple at the time of prayer--at three in the afternoon.   (Acts 3:2 NIV) Now a man crippled from birth was being carried to the temple gate called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg from those going into the temple courts. (Acts 3:3 NIV) When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for money. (Acts 3:4 NIV) Peter looked straight at him, as did John. Then Peter said, "Look at us!" (Acts 3:5 NIV) So the man gave them his attention, expecting to get something from them. (Acts 3:6 NIV) Then Peter said, "Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk." (Acts 3:7 NIV) Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man's feet and ankles became strong. (Acts 3:8 NIV) He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping, and praising God. (Acts 3:9 NIV) When all the people saw him walking and praising God, (Acts 3:10 NIV) they recognized him as the same man who used to sit begging at the temple gate called Beautiful, and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.

There are many more examples where Jesus healed in the bible. Today is no different. There is healing in the name of Jesus! Our friend Tony Abram has seen thousands and thousands of miracles as he and his wife Marge have traveled throughout the world preaching the Gospel for 47 years. Tony likes to tell the story of the crippled beggar named Carlos that was sitting in front of a church in South America. The beggar heard Tony preaching on his transistor radio. After hearing Tony`s Gospel message the beggar was healed. The next day the beggar gave a testimony at Tony and Marge`s meeting. The beggar was no longer a cripple!    Even in our family we have received miraculous healings.

A third example is the power believers have when they pray in the name of Jesus. (John 14:12 NIV) I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. (John 14:13 NIV) And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. (John 14:14 NIV) You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.  Answered prayer is a great blessing we have as believers when we pray in the name of Jesus.   I can give many, many testimonies of answered prayer. I am a Christian because my wife and others prayed for me! Of course we pray for healing in the name of Jesus.  This church and preschool is also an answer to prayer.   God gave us the vision, but the vision came to reality through a great amount of prayer.

The fourth and final example I will give about the power that at the name of Jesus is that every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. (Phil 2:10 NIV) that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, (Phil 2:11 NIV) and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.   There is a similar passage in Romans. (Rom 14:11 NIV) It is written: "'As surely as I live,' says the Lord, 'every knee will bow before me; every tongue will confess to God.'"

We have a free choice to acknowledge Jesus as Lord now and accept him as our savior.  From the Bible verses in Philippians and Romans it is clear that everyone is going to acknowledge Jesus is Lord. It is much better to do it now.  When we believe our name is written in the book of life. If we do not become a believer before we die we will acknowledge Jesus is Lord at the great white throne judgment (Rev. 20:11-15).   (Rev 20:11 NIV) Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. Earth and sky fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. (Rev 20:12 NIV) And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. (Rev 20:13 NIV) The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done.   (Rev 20:14 NIV) Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. (Rev 20:15 NIV) If anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

The name of Jesus is the name that is above every other name! Hallelujah!
