YOU ARE WORTH MORE THAN MANY SPARROWS

          July 3, 2011

(Mat 10:29 NIV) Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. (Mat 10:30 NIV) And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. (Mat 10:31 NIV) So don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

At the time Jesus lived with his disciples sparrows were of little value. In today`s money one sparrow may not have been worth more than 10 yen. Even today sparrows are not considered to be of much value. Yet, not one falls to the ground without our Heavenly father noticing it. As Jesus was sending the twelve apostles out to the lost sheep of the house of Israel he told them not to be afraid as they were worth more than many sparrows. Jesus wanted to encourage the apostles before they went on their missionary journey. Today we live in a world where many people do not think there life is worth much. Here in Japan when elderly people lose their health they often consider themselves as only a burden to their families. They have little reason to continue living and many take their own life.  However, God sees things differently. To God nothing is insignificant. In fact the very hair on your head is numbered. (Mat 10:30 NIV) And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.  God`s cares for the birds of the air, but he considers us much more important than them. (Mat 6:25 NIV) "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? (Mat 6:26 NIV) Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? One soul is very valuable to God.

A person determines what he is worth by his world view. It is the way we look at life or perceive things. It is the lens that we look at the world through. Our world view influences how we talk and act.  It influences how we treat each other. Through our world view we view life.  Why are we here?  What is the purpose of our life? What happens after we die?   Naturally, the beliefs, values and behaviors of a culture a person lives in influence a person`s world view.  Millions of people have been killed in this world because their government did not consider their lives were valuable. Examples are Russia, Germany, China and Cambodia,  countries where millions of people were killed in the past century. However, God`s view of the world is quite different. Every soul is very valuable.   In fact, in God`s eyes one soul is worth more than the whole world.   (Mat 16:26 NIV) What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?   Our Heavenly father sent Jesus into the world to die for the sins of all mankind because he considers every soul to be of great value.

We can learn about how God views things through reading the Bible.  The way God views things is called the Biblical world view.   We can only truly understand the Biblical world view after becoming a Christian.  Then we can understand our true value or worth.   Jesus paid the price for our salvation on the cross. Before we become Christians the power of sin has control of our lives and we are lost.    However, when we believe Jesus` death on the cross paid the price for our sins we begin to understand our true value.  We become children of God and are no longer in the world without any hope.   There is a reason for our life. God knew us even before we were born. (Psa 139:13 NIV) For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. (Psa 139:14 NIV) I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. (Psa 139:15 NIV) My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, (Psa 139:16 NIV) your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

After we become Christians we come to understand that all humanity has great value. We also begin to understand the plan God has for our life. We were created for a purpose.   Our value to God is very great because he sent his son to die for us. (John 3:16 NIV) "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
